I ordered this book online after recommendations from some of my professional colleagues. First, i was amazed by the caliber of its contributors-all consultants (MDs). Its a very rich ophthalmologic book, with numerous clinical ocular conditions and treatments well presented. Its a real EYE MANUAL if you ask me. At the moment, i think, it should be a mini bible for every eyecare professional- Optometrists/Ophthalmologists). The book is a must-have. I recommend it.
Of all my materials this book is probably the one I use the the most. If you want to do in-depth research on a topic this is probably not the right book. But for a quick review of a particular diagnosis or condition including critical findings and treatment this book is great.

This book provides a very well structured and organized framework for beginning ophthalmology residents while on call. It has good descriptions including signs and symptoms, appropriate diagnostic tests and treatments. It is true that there are no pictures, but it is not meant to be a comprehensive text nor an atlas. My only qualm is that not all treament recommendations offer enough guidance on selecting the appropriate treatment, at least for the beginning resident to be able to make a quick decision. Ex. Do all GCA suspects need IV steroids in the hospital? Should traumatic optic neuropathy patients be given high dose glucocorticoids or taken to surgery for canal decompression?Differentials of signs and symptoms could be expanded some to cover a few additional things that are commonly seen on call.
Sorry, as a general ophthalmologist I had to respond to the last review below. First of all, I don't think that this book is meant for physicians who have little or no experience with examining the eye. If you need a picture to diagnose corneal ulcers or conjunctivitis, the Wills Eye Manual is not for you. Any ophthalmologist, ophthalmology resident or emergency room physician with some training in eye examinations will find this helpful. I often look back on this book in order to make sure I didn't leave any differential or diagnostic test out with my patients. I do believe there is another edition out by the manufacturer and I plan on updating mine soon, perhaps with the PDA version. Bottom line: this book is terrific for the management of eye diseases for those who examine patients with eye problems frequently. It is NOT an atlas to help you figure out what that "white spot" is. I'd look to the Mass Eye and Ear Atlas or Spaulding's wonderful atlas if you need this basic kind of text. Sounds to me like the other reviewer just needs to send his patients on to an ophthalmologist.
A great tool to assist in differential diagnosis and identification of ocular conditions. A must-have for the optometrist or ophthalmologist in training. Will prove to be a great study aid for course work, national, and state boards. There are no pictures as this is not the kind of book for people who do not have background knowledge on the subject matter. More of a quick glance type of review to assist you in recalling the straight forward facts about an ocular condition.
This text has been the standard reference for managing ophhtalmic emergencies for a long time. It does not have pretty pictures because it is not meant for the general public or general physicians. It's meant for ophthalmologists, and to a lesser extent optometrists I suppose, who need the diagnostic differentials and treatment guidelines, not pictures. Recommended for every ophthalmology resident and every ophthalmology office.
Extraordinary book for the residents in training. It`s very complete and at the same time quite concise. It`s a Must have book not only for the ophtalmologist in training but for all the doctors related to the visual health and ophthalmology field, specially in the emergency room.
