I'm giving this book a 4 not because I really fell in love with it, but because I think it was brutally honest about the real physical challenge of walking the Camino. It certainly did not romanticize the walk. I have been considering this pilgrimage walk and after reading this book, I have decided that with the commercialization of the walk that there are other ways to get closer to God. It was helpful in making this personal decision. I will look for another pilgrimage less trodden by today's pilgrims, farther away from garbage dumps, highways and day trippers. The characters did not really endear themselves to me, but they were real. The Camino did not solve all of their problems, (they each had a boatload), but it sure did give them time to think about them and begin sorting them out. Good read for anyone seriously considering making the pilgrimage.
This book about the Camino to Santiago DE Compostela, was a bit different from the others I have read, this was the story written by two writers, with different styles. One a 27 year old woman Eli who has one book under her belt and is hoping that this journey will start up her writing skills once again, and the other Colin who is middle aged and has written quite a few historical novels, under the name (Colin Falconer).The two go through the normal ups and downs of most pilgrims, yet by having these two very personal and different points of view, they give us an interesting perspective, of how they are copping on this walk, from endless fields of wheat to bikers in spandex, to mad Nuns. Both suffer immense physical pain on this trip, as well as Colin's mental anguish, which he talks about quite often with wit and sarcasm. By the end of their journey they have both come to realizes things about themselves that were needed to be seen.A lot of fun insight and adventures on this trip. Very worth the read.“The Camino lies directly under the Milky Way. Some say it reflects the energy of the star systems above, that it rises up beneath your feet to change you in some way.â€
It was really interesting reading two different perspectives on their experience of walking the Camino. About the time that Colin wasdeep in his memories/loss, Elizabeth took over and wrote from her experience to keep it more balanced. Colin's self-deprecating humor was laugh out-loud, riotous. I've read dozens of books on the Camino and this book along with Jane Christmas' book, "What the Psychic Told the Pilgrim", have been my absolute favorites. I've walked the Camino de Santiago, and I highly recommend these books to anyone thinking of making the 500 mile long trek in northern Spain. I could not put the book down!
The intersection of Col & Eli's lives that culminated in the crafting of this great story. A gritty journey of rediscovery of self, resilience & much "self-talk".As an ex Australian Infantry soldier I have much empathy with both of them, particularly the load carrying struggle as you walk day after day.For an insight into that life read "Crossfire" by Robert [Dogs] Kearney. My name was "Egan" during the Vietnam deployment with "Dogs" in "Recce" Platoon.Like both authors I too have struggled with life issues [the angry young man] & my first marriage failed .Much of my early life was institutionalised, two years in an orphanage & then Reform School due to trouble with the Police as a teenager.However my Mum did a great job of sorting me out until her early death at age 46.I first borrowed this book from the library then downloaded it onto my Kindle. I enjoyed this book and wanted to know more about the 2 authors so I purchased The Naked Husband (written as Mark D'Arbanville). This, unfortunately though, presented a portrait of Colin as a self-obsessed , rather weak man (which then spoilt the impression I'd got of him from the original book) . The female author seemed to be more genuine. A truthful account of their physical and emotional journey.
I just loved the humor in this book and enjoyed every page from start to finish. It is such a jolly good read that I have recommended it to many of my friends. Colin Bowles had me laughing from start to finish and left me wondering what has happened to him personally. Hopefully that is another book to read. I would have loved to see some photos in the book instead of having to go to Google.
I really enjoyed this book, I felt like I walked with them. It was so much more than just a description of the trip. There was a bit of history, some personal issues each one worked through, some sheer endurance issues and more.I liked the set up, in which Eli and Colin each wrote passages from their own perspective. I would definitely recommend this book, I was a little sorry when it ended.
Truth and courage outweigh fear and lies. This book moved me tears so many times and was difficult to put down. I connected seriously with the premise of walking toward discovery of soul no matter how hard the path, no matter the personal cost. This book will go down as a personal lifetime favorite a book like this comes along rarely.
