Most people know little or nothing about this second war that the United States fought against Great Britain. It occurred when the US was still organizing itself. It was a David verses Goliath battle, for England was the most powerful country in 1812.This short book gives us all the significant facts. We read about the difficulties facing the US at that time and just before it, the mistreatment of Indians, the problems with Canada, the blockade by the British of American shipping, the kidnapping of American sailors, how some US citizens wanted war and others neutrality, the declaration of war, the difficulties faced by the US president, the campaigns of 1812, 1813, 1814, and how the US beat England and achieved peace.
Very nice overview of the very important war that few Americans know much about. Timing is everything. Had the British not had the war with France going on, the Americans would have likely been crushed. I wonder what this country would look like even today without that European war.
This book, a short piece on American history, sums up the War of 1812 rather nicely and a pretty decent expose' on America's 2nd go-round with Britain. Though a short piece on America's early years, the significance I find in this written account reminds us of just how fragile her conditions were. Far from the World's most dominant superpower of today, America stepped off into conflict it came close to losing more than the quest for Canada. Whether destiny or stupidity, American resolve to possess Canadian territory ended in Canada's favor and most importantly rightly so.
It was an easy read, as a relatively short essay on the war, describing key elements of it. The facts are there without any real illumination of the main characters. The book reads more like a history book (I guess that's what it is supposed to do), providing straight information on the facts. I learned a lot about the war, which I didn't know much about, and I was surprised that it couldn't be classified as a really major war, considering that the British had what seemed like more important things to do than trying to beat our young country.
Every Friday, I receive an email from Hourly History with a few books to choose from. These books are free! I love reading history, but I love reading free history even more. Join Hourly History’s list serv.
Very factual but, not enough mentioned about the burning of Washington. We would have probably lost the War of 1812 if the British would not have been busy with other things, like Napoleon. Anyway, worth the time to read.
Nice concise review of the players of the War 1812 with Britain. Good thing Britain and France bit off more than they could chew fighting each other rather than conquering the early US. We lucked out by default gaining the Northwest Territories and the Lousianna Purchase lands. Only the Native Americans lost in all ways and the British acheived the retention of Canada as was their goal anyway.
This book is a quick overview of the war from start to finish. Grammar and spelling are poor; though the book is inexpensive I expected at least decent proofreading before publishing. My suggestion to the author is to cite a source once in a while for the opinions that are expressed in the writing.
