Life in the Fast Lane doesn't do this person justice. I think sadly in these times, he would have been classified as a bipolar and given a lot of meds. It's funny how he became a muse for so many men and women. A gay icon. A gay magnet. A real interesting person from his days of male hustling to his endearing moments with Kerouac. He's Dean Moriarity you know, nothing can make me see him any different. These letters provide some insight to his restlessness and his inner mind's working but no one can know what he was thinking those last days in Mexico that led to his untimely lonely death. If you're a fan or a young person who's curious, rent Magic Bus Ride, you get to see some home movie footage of him there.I enjoyed reading these letters and it's really a piece of history not in just an era of time but it's almost a dead art really, now with emails and instagram and all that crap, collections like this won't exist again and that's pretty sad. These aren't just collected letters of a dead icon but of a dead time that simply will never return.
Neal Cassady is better known as the inspiration for the driver/companion Dean Moriarty in "On the Road", Cody in "Visions of Cody" and the real life driver of the next genration in "Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test". Other than "The First Third" published by City Lights many years ago there is little actually written by this fascinating personality. These letters are give a good idea of the style of speaking, writing and living (good and bad) that touched so many people and crossed between the generations of the beats and the hippies. Not always inspired, sometimes pedestrian, Cassady's voice is always compelling. This book is essential reading for fan's of the beats and should be on the bookshelf along with the letters of Kerouac, Burroughs and Ginsberg. Fans of Ken Kesey, Ed McClanahan, Larry McMurtry, Gurney Norman, the Grateful Dead, etc. will appreciate this book as well.It is sad to read how often Cassady talks of writing a new book when you know that he never really get around to doing it but, in a sense, he lived a life which became a part of many books. In that sense, as an inspiration, a many faceted character he is very much a part of literature and this will add deservingly to this recognition.
Get to know the cameo character of the Beat Scene through his own letters. Cassady is such an important and inspiring character, but we read more about hm than we get to read by him. I'm really glad this compilation of his letters is available.
This book is AMAZING!! There was a letter where Neal gave Jack his opinion on their respective relationships with Lucien Carr with a very thorough and eloquent analysis that really seemed to hit the nail on the head. It was so unexpected because even after I read it, I couldn't find a trace of it anywhere on the internet. Definitely new information here and overall great writing! Highly recommended for any Beat fan.
Neal Cassady was, for most of his adult life, a prolific writer, spreading his hep words to the likes of Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Bill Burroughs, and other beat writers who used Neal as the star of many of their works (especially K). Cassady is a born storyteller, as is evidenced by his energetic and exciting letters; however, it becomes evident that he is not a born writer, and as exciting as his letters are, they say quite little. Regardless, it is obvious how Cassady became a new archetype of American modern literature, and fans of the Beats would be remiss not to check out this wee tome. Note that after his imprisonment for distributing "tea" the volume drops off considerably. Was it prison, life or LSD that lessened the latent genius' writing? We'll never know.
I really like the Beats and Neal was at crest of the wave. This book offers a ton of great insight into the man and his thoughts. The reader walks away from this novel feeling as though he'd been introduced to more of the real Cassady than he's ever seen before.
Incredible insight into a true icon of the 'Beat' generation and a 'muse' for Jack Kerouac, Allan Ginsberg, and many others. So well worth reading!
Unless you already know the history of the beats quit well this book is fairly useless. I think if you already knew the broad brush of history this would fill in the gaps but it makes a bad primer.
