Fresh Off the Boat (TV Tie-in Edition): A Memoir, by Eddie Huang

Review

“Brash and funny . . . outrageous, courageous, moving, ironic and true.”—New York Times Book Review   “Mercilessly funny and provocative, Fresh Off the Boat is also a serious piece of work.  Eddie Huang is hunting nothing less than Big Game here. He does everything with style.”—Anthony Bourdain   “Bawdy and frequently hilarious . . . a surprisingly sophisticated memoir about race and assimilation in America . . . as much James Baldwin and Jay-Z as Amy Tan . . . rowdy [and] vital . . . It’s a book about fitting in by not fitting in at all.”—Dwight Garner, The New York Times   “Uproariously funny . . . emotionally honest.”—Chicago Tribune   “Huang is a fearless raconteur. [His] writing is at once hilarious and provocative; his incisive wit pulls through like a perfect plate of dan dan noodles.”—Interview   “Although writing a memoir is an audacious act for a thirty-year-old, it is not nearly as audacious as some of the things Huang did and survived even earlier. . . . Whatever he ends up doing, you can be sure it won’t look or sound like anything that’s come before. A single, kinetic passage from Fresh Off the Boat . . . is all you need to get that straight.”—Bookforum

This autobiography is a waste of money. It starts out interesting, learning about Eddie's childhood but then turns sour as it gets to his adult life. He pretty much glorifies violence and crime, bragging about beating people up with a padlock (similar to brass knuckles) simply because they looked at him the wrong way, or said something ignorant back in high school. He references his drug use often. as if he's proud of it, and there is not a single paragraph where he does not use the F word. Honestly, I don't mind foul language, but it gets obnoxious when it's used 10 times on a page, every page. Not to mention the ungodly amount of slang he uses, that makes it 20x harder to read. Top that off with obscure references to clothes, shoes, sports, video games, and cars that do not at all relate to what he's talking about, you end up with a book full of incomprehensible gibberish. Save your money.

I came to the U.S. in 1983 at 5 years old as a Cambodian immigrant, growing up I thought no one could ever feel or know what I was going through, especially since I grew up in Shreveport, LA. Thank you Eddie Huang for writing this book, it saved me, I went through almost everything he went through and I thought there was something wrong with me for thinking the way I did. Although I am to old to go punching people in the face, I will never let anyone disrespect me again. When I read the line"Every time someone called me a chink, it took a little piece of me" I finally felt a little weight off my shoulder cause it felt like was not alone. Thank for writing about all the tuff stuff

I love this book and gave it to my sister for her birthday...so now when she comes in my room holding it, we bust out laughing and reminisce on our favorite parts. He's cutting up so hard, but with heartfelt raw honesty. His stories about bullying and racism from other kids and everyone were really painful to read, but maybe because I could relate...A lot of people will relate and love this. He's a joyful spirit, and a good story teller with a lot of cool perspectives on race, class, culture, pop culture, education, family dynamics...everything.

What started off as research for a spec I was writing turned into one hell of an unexpected delight. Growing up as the child of FOBs has been such a defining part of who I am, and I am entirely cut off from that community in LA. Huang spoke to so many parts of my experience with a nuance and complexity and flavor that I had never experienced before. His thoughts on cultural appropriation versus sharing culture via food are charmingly sophisticated and plain-spoken, which is rare for culture/race discussions these days. While I disagree with some of what he has to say, I sincerely hope more people engage with his work and point-of-view. It is, at the very least, surprising, engaging, and satisfying. A+

A real honest, comical and (at times) cringeworthy novel well worth the read.Eddie's story is very much his own-- his perspective, thoughts, struggles and reflections of an ABC (American Born Chinese) growing up in 1980s/1990s America. But his story probably also rings familiar to many of his readers who equally identify as ABCs. The author's memoir is peppered with intriguing stories, all-too-expected fobby stereotypes, and more than a few instances that make you want to cheer. This book doubles as an informative memoir, as well as an entertaining bedtime read. As an ABC myself growing up in the same era as Eddie, many of the struggles he went through were very reminiscent of my own childhood. In the end, Eddie is a champion of his own experiences, wisdom, and perseverance.Yes, the book isn't written as a scholarly memento. There's foul language, PG-13 jokes, and plenty of shout-outs to 90's hip hop / american cultural references. But all that, and so much more, help make this book a really memorable read.

Haven't read Eddie's latest but finally cracking open FOB motivates me to hit that next. As he finishes by saying, Eddie may not speak for all Asian Americans, but his voice is needed just as much today as ever. Sometimes the book dwells a little too much on his exploits, but it always tells it like it is.
