This is a fabulously written book with exquisite photographs. The Bunny Mellon collection of Schlumberger pieces is legendary and couldn’t be presented any better in print. Congratulations to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for creating such a treasure. However, I can’t recommend this book. I’ve had two copies and both are poorly printed. The black backgrounds are mottled and streaked. I’m afraid this will probably be the case for any copy from the first printing.
I will keep this book because I want to own a photographic record of these amazing jewels, but I must agree with the first reviewer’s statements about the poor print quality. Black pages/backgrounds look as if they have been erratically sprayed with white pigment. It’s an embarrassment to see such poor execution in what should be a high-quality publication. The low price of the book surprised me; I wonder if some corners were cut in printing?
