First, I should point out that this book is not new; it is a paperback edition of a book first published in 2011 as "In the Name of Glory", cleverly renamed to tie in with the new movie on substantially the same topic. The book rather reads like a movie script, but it appears that that is purely coincidental, and the movie team appears not to have consulted the book in the writing of the actual movie script. This is a very detailed look at the 1976 Grand Prix season, with particular emphasis, of course, on the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda. A considerable number of sources are listed in the Acknowledgements, and as a result we find out much about the two drivers' relationships with each other, with their families, their teammates, their team bosses and owners, their women and the press.I lived through this period, and saw both men win races at Watkins Glen (Lauda in 1975 and Hunt in 1976). Compared with the information available in the motoring press back then, this book adds a lot of substance "between the lines" and I found some of it quite unexpected.A bonus is the marvelous insert of color photos of the season by the noted photographer Rainer Schlegelmilch, and there is an appendix showing detailed race-by-race results, and a very detailed index. Now, should you read the book before or after you see the movie? I'd say, both! That's what I did, and the two complement each other quite well. There may be more books released as a result of the movie, but this one is a great start.

Rush to Glory was a laborious read. It is written in a deadpan, manner-of-fact writing style which was not as entertaining as I imagined it would be. However, the behind the scenes story of the battle between Niki Lauda and James Hunt for the Formula 1 World Championship was fascinating enough in a race-by-race, blow-by-blow manner.James Hunt emerges as a more astute and engaging character than just as a playboy and Niki Lauda comes off as being even more coldly calculating than he seems on TV. It is a real shame that James Hunt passed away so young in his 40's. He comes out of this book as the driver you would very much like to meet in a Meet and Greet. Niki Lauda comes out as one of Formula 1's great champions--certainly one of the bravest, but not the guy you would wait in line for an autograph for an hour or so. In the end, a bit of misdirection and chicanery by McLaren helps Hunt to out point Lauda at Fuji in the rain in the final race of the 76 season when Niki Lauda chose to park his car, because he felt it was too dangerous.

I've followed Formula 1 since 1961. But the events in Rush to Glory occurred while I was a college freshman and was far too distracted to pay close attention to the sport at that time. But the buzz stayed with me and I was always curious to learn more about the Lauda/Hunt rivalry, the horrific crash at the Nurburgring and Lauda's amazing comeback. Learning that Rush, the movie, was based on the book...I simply had to read it.What a treat. So many insights into the machinations of Formula 1 and particularly within the McLaren and Ferrari teams...and an all-too brief peek at Hesketh. Well done, Superstar!

Even if you are not a fan of F1 racing, this book is a delight to read. To be brief, the personnel stories of the two men is itself a pleasure to read but the behind the scenes struggles with owners, engineers, Ferrari himself, the nature of various tracks is a great introduction into the sport and told with all the emotion and drama one would expect in such a dangerous sport. There is not one chapter in this book that will bore you or may appear tedious. We all know the names of the drivers and the marques, but here we are introduced to the stars behind the scenes known only to the drivers. If you cannot understand the fascination with any type of motor racing, this book should pique your interest.

After seeing "Rush" I just had to read "the real story" and this book does not disappoint. I think the saying that "truth is stranger than fiction" was predicated on just such examples as this......One could simply not invent the Formula One drama that was lived by these two incredibly brave and audacious super stars of the sport......Their lives both on and off the track make for fascinating reading and I was sorry when the story ended......I am officially obsessed with this era of racing and these two men. Amazing.......

I am finding this book very interesting. My husband was a Formula 1 fan. I did not understand it then, but I think now I do. My husband passed away. I admire Mr. Lauda. I also saw on TV, how he help the airlines solve a problem. If what I saw was true, Thank you very much, Mr. Lauda for making airline travel safer. Thank you very much.

If you liked the movie Rush, you will enjoy this book. It adds a lot more detail and is engagingly written. I was living in the UK in 1976 and followed the events of that year in Formula One so it was really interesting to get a good deal of the behind the scenes background. An easy read too, a great vacation book.

The book is a fascinating look at the personalities and politics involved in Formula One racing, set in a year of extraordinary drama on the track. I'm not sure how much it would appeal to non-racing fans, although it is a story of a couple of outsized personalities, their rivalry and lives outside the race car as well. I read the book after seeing the movie, and of course, the book has a lot more detail and nuance - although the movie is entertaining as well.
