I bought this coloring book as a Christmas gift for my sister, once I received it and had a chance to look at it, I decided to order one for myself as well. The pictures are highly detailed, the paper is heavy and strong (could be used for more than crayons and colored pencils), the pictures appear on only one side of the page, so no worries if it bleeds through the page. My favorite feature is that all pages are perforated, making it so easy to take out one page at a time to color without the whole of the book making coloring cumbersome. It also comes with sample pictures of the real art, so if you wanted it to look like the original, you have a guide to go by.
I homeschool my three young children (2 boys, one toddler girl). I am NOT a art expert or a particularly well-educated art individual. However, I need the boys to be busy with fine motor movement to keep their brains engaged while we do our memory work. I purchased another coloring book for another art era and was pleased, but it doesn't hold a candle to this one. I appreciated the pages only being printed on one side as well as the artist write ups in the back of the book. I was able to take five minutes to introduce famous names in art and then expose them to his/her work. The thumbnail photos of the originals were also helpful. My children at times enjoyed trying to follow the original (though I did not require it). It was a great way to introduce young children to fine art. Trying to color the pictures also required paying more attention to the details of the art than they would have otherwise attempted just looking at the original masterpiece. I have to say, some of the color combinations the children came up with really freshened up a classic. I proudly displayed their art in the dining area so all could see their work. The toddler joined in when she wanted. Made it easy to include her!This is also a good book to introduce children to the idea of landscape, portrait and still life art. Even my four-year old now knows each category!!!
We're using this book as our homeschool art curriculum and it is SO COOL. My eldest loves to color/paint and feel like she's creating masterpieces, but gets frustrated with her own limitations. This book allows her to color the masters, which exposes her to the painting for much longer than a quick glance. She gets to put her own personal spin on famous works and loves it!
My husband and I are really enjoying this book. Hubby is the artist and it took something like this to get him interested in "coloring".Great pictures. High quality paper. Printing is on one side of the paper. This is good since we are using gel pens right now. Hubby really wants to use pencils on these. Nice that the pages are perforated, this makes it easy to get the pages out of the book. I would like to use the pages to make cards.
I love Marty Nobel's work and have purchased a number of Dover books by this author. The pictures in this book are gorgeous. Very detailed work and an opportunity to explore impressionism. All of the art works are featured on the inside cover in their original form so that you can copy them if you want too. Pictures are single sided and paper is good quality. Paints would work well with these pictures.
The adults and children of the adults I sent this coloring book to were equally happy. We don't necessarily need adult coloring books. Just give us a coloring book and it brings back that happy time memory. I think that it is very relaxing and important for adults to get back to the things that made us smile during our life time. Like coloring, jumping rope, swinging in swings, going up & down a sliding board etc.
Love it! If you ever wanted to try 'duplicating' a classic, or putting your own spin on a few, this is a very fun and interesting book of art to color. i really like the full color thumbprints in the back with artist and piece descriptions;very informative and gives a good frame of reference. Nice sturdy paper stock as well. If you admire the impressionists, this is a fun way to try on their shoes.
I love coloring famous art masterpieces in my own choices of colors. This is a great book to own if you are an adult who enjoys coloring in coloring books as a stress reliever.
