The idea that blood type plays a role in health, wellness, and personality wasn't exactly new when Dr. Peter D'Adamo came out with Eat Right 4 Your Type in 1997. The idea had been around for most of the 19th century, and had gained quite a bit of currency in Japan. But it was a startling idea to most Americans, who made the book a bestseller that was translated into more than 40 languages and spawned a similarly successful sequel, Cook Right 4 Your Type. Now, Dr. D'Adamo--armed with new studies on genetic links between blood types, disease, and behavior--looks at the psychological and medical peculiarities that seem to predominate in one blood type or another. Type O's, for example, have lower than average amounts of a brain chemical called dopamine, leading to poor concentration, hyperactivity, and temper tantrums. A's tend to manufacture too much cortisol, a stress hormone that can lead to hypertension and has even been implicated in Alzheimer's disease and cancer. Type B's and AB's clear nitric oxide out of their systems faster, allowing them to calm down more rapidly than other blood types when stressed. I've read reviews both good and bad on the idea of the blood-type diet. I'm not going to get into the theory behind all that for the sake of brevity but will just focus on my experience, which to me is the most important. For a decade I have been concerned with health, diet, fitness, and nutrition. I've practiced regular exercise, cooking for myself the majority of the time, and eating healthy, fresh, and organic foods as often as possible. I ate fresh fruits and vegetables multiple times per day as well. I shop mainly at Whole Foods and farmers markets and when I ate meat, it was the best quality stuff that I could get. I am a male in my mid-thirties and have never been anywhere near over-weight. On the contrary, I am tall and quite thin, but not a rail. I did not start this diet to lose weight and actually losing muscle mass was a concern of mine when starting this diet.For my entire life I have struggled with drastic swings in energy level and mental clarity (brain-fog) throughout any given day, especially after meals. I had heard positive things about the blood-type diet years ago from a co-worker. One morning, after having plenty of rest for a couple of days, I woke up, yet again, with no energy. I literally said to myself, "There's no good reason for this. I've had enough!" And there and then I decided to give the blood-type diet a try. I decided to go all out for one month and then go from there.My blood-type is A, so I was quite dismayed when I looked at the A-type diet and saw that at it's strictest adherence level, it's pretty much a vegan diet. My initial reaction was actually one of slight anger, but I would not be swayed and continued on. I am very glad that I did. For years I have limited my consumption of dairy and wheat, because I had some adverse reactions to them- nothing serious, but I noticed that too much wheat made me crash and some dairy gave me lousy gas after eating it. That's not to say that I completely cut them out, but I limited them considerably, and it turns out that my gut feeling was a good one.In a nutshell, my brain-fog and energy swings are now gone. Turns out that they were my body's way of telling me it didn't like what it was getting (actually, it was my body's reaction to struggling to digest the food that I was eating, which is the main point behind the diet). I thought that these swings were just a part of living, but it turns out that life doesn't have to be that way. I also HAD a problem with over-production of mucous since I was a child, which is genetic, and that too has been remedied. I breath and think much more clearly and consistently. My moods are much more stable and consistent and I deal with stress much more effectively. I wake up in the morning with energy, which was rarely the case before. I feel better than I ever have in my life, and this is helping me to be the best me that I can be on a consistent basis. All this, and I noticed an improvement on day one of the diet and it just kept getting better until it leveled off about two weeks in. I am now in the 7th week and have no plans of going back. I could talk AT LENGTH about the subtleties, but won't go on.Lastly, I've purchased most of the stuff that Dr. D'Adamo has written. While I would recommend reading everything, I recommend reading this book first along with the pocket-guide for your specific type. It is newer, a bit more fine-tuned, and more pertinent to total life-style, all the while still having plenty of info on diet and nutrition. And contrary to arguments I've read, this book is extremely well researched and has footnotes to medical studies for every suggestion he makes. It is quite in-depth, even more so than "Eat Right For Your Blood Type". As I read, I keep finding explanations for why I've reacted in certain ways to certain foods and activities for my entire life. It's been very nice to have an explanation for so many things.I am still fine-tuning/personalizing this diet and will be for many, many months to see what level of adherence suits me best. I have been very strict with it thus far and feel INCREDIBLE, but will slowly and methodically try eating some more neutral foods here and there to see how I react to them, as now, when I eat something that "my body doesn't like" I feel it within an hour. What a difference this has made in my quality of life!
After being exposed to the "blood type diet" by my former nutritionist, I realized I had to read Dr. D'Adamo's books. I was shocked that they were initially printed 15+ years ago, as the news of the blood type diet has apparently never hit the Midwest, where I live. Learning how to eat properly was like turning on a lightbulb.I grew up eating the typical American diet, which I was taught is "healthy:" a diet heavy in protein and fairly heavy with starch, the "meat and potatoes" type. Though I was never a picky eater, my palate certainly wasn't accustomed to strange grains, like amaranth or quinoa, and I never ate kale or swiss chard until a few years ago.Learning that, since I am blood type A-, I should focus on a vegetarian diet with some turkey, chicken, and fish, I started adopting this huge lifestyle change and have not regretted it. The biggest difference I notice is less mucous. I've always had a cough and always with discharge, but now that I am mainly laying off dairy products and wheat, plus little red meat, the cough has receded greatly.While I don't quite understand all of D'Adamo's philosophies or theories, I admit they are soundly rooted in science. What I learned in college anatomy class mirrors exactly what D'Adamo explains about our bodies and blood types. He does an excellent job in translating medical terminology in layman's terms.
This book has helped my wife and I fine tune our diests, and what a difference it has made in my overall health! We traditionally had always eaten lots of red and white meats, beef and pork, from childhood as I was raided on a farm and we raised our own stock, but come to find out eating beef and pork for Type A blood types is a no no, and I feel so much better without those meats. We now eat Chicken, Fish and Turkey but have also increased non-meat protien sources as well. And, I'm slowly trimming down.
I have had this book for well over 10 years, since I began to follow the Eat Right 4 Your Type food lists and lifestyle recommendations. It can be challenging reading for a person who is not familiar with medical terminology. I think I read the whole thing 3 times before I was really comfortable with it, but it is one of the most valuable "health" books I have ever read!It is not necessary to read the entire book if you know your blood type and only want to learn what is right for yourself, but it is incredibly interesting to read it all and learn about what is right for other blood types.....especially if you are married to an "other" blood type and/or have children with blood types that are different from yours. For instance, an A can produce children with type O and their children can be either A or O. And, an A can produce children with a type B and their kids (if they have several) could be A, B, AB or even O. IF you truly follow the food lists and exercises plans that have been tried and tested for well over 25 years, that can make for interesting meal times and family activities as well.For beginners who are interested in learning how blood type affects every aspect of your body, I recommend Eat Right 4 Your Type by Dr. D'Adamo. However, my granddaughter is in medical school and has applied for residency to start this fall. She was interested in the subject, so I gave her my copy of "Live Right," knowing she would understand all of the terminology with no problems . Then, of course, I had to have another for myself.As a personal aside: Granddaughter took it to bed with her the first night she was here visiting and the next morning she came downstairs and said, "GRANDMA! I read most of the Type A section last night and that is SO ME!!!!"For only $5 I got an almost pristine copy for myself here on Amazon.
