"An enticing overview of tools, techniques, and discoveries in what the author rightly characterizes 'a red-hot field in astronomy.' Alas; it is perhaps too red-hot. Not only is Kenney's count of accepted and potential exoplanets (as of May 2016) well out of date already, but her claim that 'Wolf-1061' (sic: that's actually the name of the star and its system) is the nearest Earthlike planet in the habitable 'Goldilocks Zone' has been trumped by the recent discovery of a closer candidate orbiting Proxima Centauri. Still, along with describing in nontechnical terms each tool in the researcher's kit―from space- and ground-based telescopes of various types to instruments that detect subtle stellar wobbles, spectrum changes, microlensing, and other telling signs―the author fills in the historical background of exoplanet research and profiles some of its weirder findings. She also casts side glances at extremophile life on Earth and other, at least tangentially related, topics. The small format gives the assortment of photos, artists' renditions, diagrams, and generic star fields a cramped look, but readers curious about how researchers could possibly detect such dinky, distant objects as planets belonging to other star systems will come away satisfied and intrigued. I am typically not the first person to review an item, nor do I usually purchase something without research and reading many reviews. I took a chance on this book and read up on Karen Kenney's Amazon page which is very impressive. Probably like many others, I got really interested in the topic of exoplanets and was searching for any book that would give me, and my kids a good insight into what has been discovered.The book is a general introduction to the topic. The illustrations are good, and the content has some level of detail. It goes over an introduction of telescopes and how exoplanets were found. However, there are only a few chapters and only a few pages per chapter, so it does not cover the material with a lot of depth or a level of detail I would have expected for the price. Somehow even though the book is 88 pages, the information seems very sparse, the hard cover binding is thicker than the actual pages, which are not very big (6 inch x 9 inch) and the smaller font with coloured background makes it a bit hard to read. In the end, this was an expensive introductory or kids book, or an underperforming book worth picking up for an adult who has astronomy background and wants more specifics. I was disappointed. I am still left looking for other books on the topic that have more infographics, more information about known exoplanets and more detailed information. I should probably have just got the Kindle version which is priced more appropriately for the content, but I thought it would be more impressive in hardcover.
Browsed this for way to long, but REALLY wanted to see it in a hard cover form with full color, glossy photos! I love the universe! I can imagine being born at a better time (when we can actually VISIT these places!), but, being born in this time, I am grateful to be around to see these new worlds (sigh!). So amazing!
