I chose this ebook over the only other one of this play because the other is noted to be an adaptation and this one claims to be true to the original. I cannot address the accuracy of this translation since I am unable to read the play in its original Yiddish. There is some transliterated Yiddish in this version which is not spelled the way I am used to seeing it. There is a glossary that provides English translations for the Yiddish words and phrases. Footnotes would have been more user friendly, especially in an ebook format. The two most "shocking" scenes one hears and reads about related to this play -- the lesbian kiss and the Torah being thrown -- are not in this version. One wonders why and if more is missing? There are many typos in the English, and there are some formatting issues. They were annoyances but most did not intrude significantly on the reading experience; however, they are concerns. The play itself is a classic; just don't know how this version compares to the original.
Read this because of the amazing and unforgettable play Indecent, now on Broadway, which is about this play. Incredible that it was written when and where it was. It's strong, challenging, and a bit clunky, a kind of lowlife Yiddish tragedy where almost nothing is redeemed, except for a moment of stolen and multiply forbidden love.
